Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
Remember America Coming Together (search), or ACT, the organization funded by billionaire George Soros (search) that raised tens of millions of dollars to defeat George Bush last year, and even hired former prison inmates, including sex offenders, to go door-to-door in battleground states to register voters?
It boasted that it "held conversations at 4.6 million doorstops about the truth [behind] the Iraq war," and "launched the largest get-out-the-vote effort the Democratic Party has ever seen." Well, America Coming Together is now coming apart. The group has informed its staff that their paychecks will end after this month. Its "Jobs" page online is no longer active. And it has shut down its state offices across the country.
Presidential Vacations Covered by The Post
The Washington Post -- under the headline "Vacationing Bush poised to set a record" -- says today that "To critics and late-night comics, [Bush's vacations] symbolize a lackadaisical approach to the world's most important job, an impression bolstered by ... his disinclination to work nights or weekends." But, when Bill Clinton (search) was president, the Post seemed worried he wasn't getting *enough* rest, even calling him "a bit vacation-impaired." In 1993, the Post reported, "Clinton's 'Vacation' isn't much of a break; So far, Trip has meant golfing, deciding where to go next and doing a whole lot of work." And in 1995, the Post said a tired-looking Clinton "finds it difficult to leave work behind entirely" while on vacation.
Product Liability?
The relatives of seven Mexicans and Hondurans who suffocated inside a rented trailer after being smuggled into the United States are now suing the trailer's maker, Great Dane Trailers, claiming that it failed to warn of "the dangers of transporting individuals inside the trailer." Moreover, their complaint says, the trailer was a "refrigerator trailer" with no ventilation, and "was designed to only open from the outside, when at a complete stop."
The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. District Court in Victoria, Texas, also targets the truck driver -- convicted several months ago of transporting illegal aliens -- and the company that leased him the truck. All in all, the victims' relatives are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
Fearless Leader's Feats
The North Korean government wants you to know some things about their fearless leader. According to a report in North Korean media, Kim Jong Il (search) pilots jet fighters, writes operas, produces movies and -- though he hadn't played before -- was able to achieve something in golf that not even a professional has ever done. The article says Kim got 11 holes-in-one in his first round of golf. For the record, the chances of only two holes-in-one in a single round are about one in 14 million.
