Alaska Airlines said Monday it canceled 41 flights between Alaska and major West Coast cities because of a rising cloud of ash resulting from a volcano eruption last week.

The carrier, a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group Inc., said it has canceled flights between Alaska and cities including Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The airline said it is monitoring the ash and is expecting to resume flights later Monday.

Alaska Airlines said it is attempting to reschedule passengers on the affected flights. Travelers can check flight status at alaskaair.com or (800) ALASKA-AIR.
