The Washington Post Buries Facts

USA Today headlined its story on President Bush's meetings with foreign leaders in New York yesterday as follows: French President "Chirac Signals Flexibility on Iraq."
In the The Los Angeles Times, the headline was…"Bush, Schroeder End Feud; Germany Offers Aid in Iraq."
In the The Washington Times, it was "U.S., Germany Put Differences Aside on Iraq."

Then there was the The Washington Post headline, "Bush Fails to Gain Pledges on Troops Or Funds for Iraq." Not until page 22 do you read that the White House said Bush did not ask foreign leaders for troops or money. Even deeper on page 22, comes mention of the Bush-Schroeder reconciliation.

Noted But Not Notified

When the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (search) yesterday sent out a press release complaining about the equipment to be used in the California recall election, the release included the names of all eight commissioners.

But three Republican-appointed commissioners…Peter Kirsanow, Russell Redenbaugh and Abigail Thernstrom…say they were neither consulted nor even aware of the release. And they have now sent out a letter, saying, "we cannot associate ourselves with a statement made on our behalf without the dignity of notice or an opportunity to be heard."

It is the latest event in the controversial tenure of Commission Chairwoman Mary Frances Berry, whose attempt to block Kirsanow's appointment to the commission was shot down by a federal appeals court.

The Democratic Campaign Trail

A new poll out today shows that while presidential candidate Howard Dean (search) still leads the Democratic race in the key state of New Hampshire…with 36 percent of Democrats saying they'd support him…fellow candidate John Kerry (search) has gained ground in the past month.

The Marist College poll shows 24 percent of New Hampshire Democrats say they would support Kerry, compared with 17 percent who said that a month ago. General Wesley Clark (search)…a recent addition to the field of candidates…is in third place with 11 percent.

Affirmative Action Bake Sale

The Young Conservatives of Texas has raised only $1.50 from what it called an Affirmative Action bake sale…white males were charged $1.00 per cookie, white women paid $.75, Hispanics $.50 and blacks $.25.

The group said the bake sale…held at Southern Methodist University in Dallas…was to protest the use of race or gender in college admissions. But a black student at the university said the bake sale was offensive, and the school shut it down.
