An official in Turkey says attackers have killed at least five Turkish soldiers and wounded several others in an ambush in foggy weather in central Turkey.

The local governor in Tokat province says the attack occurred near a paramilitary outpost Monday. A mayor of a town in the province says at least eight soldiers were wounded.

Authorities have not identified the attackers but Kurdish and leftist militants are active in the area.

The clash follows violent street protests by Kurdish rebel supporters across the country. At least two people were killed and several injured in clashes in several cities over the past weeks.

Kurdish rebels are fighting for autonomy in Turkey's Kurdish dominated southeast.
