FREEPORT, N.Y. – Four fishermen are reeling a day after being rescued from a sinking boat in shark-infested waters off New York's Fire Island.
The rescuers included two off-duty Nassau Marine Bureau police officers, who also had been shark fishing on Thursday.
They heard the panicked distress call and raced six miles. They got there just minutes before the boat, named Anger Management, went under.
The fishermen put on life jackets. They had to swim 50 feet through 6-foot swells to get to their rescuers' boat.
The rescued pilot, Ray Pasieka, told Newsday: "We knew there was a shark in the water in eating distance."
