A governor in southern Brazil says at least three inmates are dead after rival prison gangs battled each other for hours.

Television images showed prisoners on the roof of the lockup in Curitiba kicking one man and beating others with sticks.

Parana state Gov. Roberto Requiao said Friday that three inmates died. Police said there were multiple deaths but could immediately not confirm the number.

A prison spokesman said the riot ended after authorities agreed to transfer some inmates. He would not give his name in keeping with department policy.

Most Brazilian prisons are packed beyond capacity and ruled by gangs.
