The Toyota Prius may reign supreme as mileage king in the car world, but in the land of pickups, the gentle giant from Japan has to settle for second place.

The Tacoma comes powered by a puny-on-paper 159-horsepower 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that churns out 20 mpg city/25 highway, but don’t let the little guy fool you. Its maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds is the same as the Nissan Frontier.

You’ll have to settle for the 5-speed manual, though, the optional automatic drinks a little extra juice, dropping the city figure to 19 mpg. At $14,965 the Tacoma is also one of the cheapest pickups you can get yourself into, but it’s an also-ran in that category, too.
