NEW YORK – Two police department divers leaped from a helicopter hovering over the frigid East River to rescue a woman who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge.
The daring rescue happened Saturday at about 7 a.m.
The NYPD says helicopter pilot Erin Nolan was able to get within a few yards of the floating victim.
Divers Michael Cocchi and Jeff Dowling then went into the water from a height of about 12 feet, plucked the woman in the current and swam her to a Fire Department boat.
Police say the 22-year-old woman is in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.
