Authorities say two upstate New York police officers who were shot while responding to an emergency call at an apartment building are in stable condition.

Police say the officers were fired upon late Tuesday when they apparently interrupted a home invasion in Rochester, one of the state's biggest cities. Police say it's unclear if the officers returned fire.

Police spokesman LaRon Singletary says one of the wounded officers has had surgery after being shot three times while the other will undergo an operation for a leg wound.

The officers names weren't being released Wednesday morning.

Singletary says police will resume a yard-by-yard search for at least one gunman on Wednesday.
