LOS ANGELES – A jury recommended that two former Los Angeles housing officials pay $528,000 for failing to oversee federal money meant to help the agency shelter the poor.
The Housing Authority sued the two officials in 2006 alleging that they failed to monitor millions of dollars meant for use by the agency.
Former executive director Donald Smith and former assistant executive director Lucille Loyce are jointly responsible for paying the entire award recommended Tuesday by the jury.
Neither Smith nor Loyce was criminally prosecuted. Smith resigned, and Loyce was fired.
The lawsuit also alleged Loyce had sent some of the money to a consultant who also is her friend.
Attorneys for both did not immediately return messages.
