Two people are dead and a third is seriously wounded after a car-to-car shooting on a San Diego highway.

The cars were traveling eastbound on Highway 54 just before midnight Sunday night when a gunman in one of the vehicles opened fire at the driver of another vehicle with four young men in it, causing the driver to lose control and crash.

Sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos says two people in the demolished car are dead and a third is hospitalized with a bullet wound.

One passenger was thrown from the car and another fell partially outside of it, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

It wasn't immediately known if the victims died as a result of the crash or bullet wounds.

There are no arrests, no motive or description of the shooters or their vehicle.

Brugos told the newspaper the victims appeared to be in their late teens to early 20s.
