Swiss police say an American man and woman have been found dead on a mountain in southern Switzerland.

Valais state police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet says the 53-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were found late Friday at an altitude of about 13,100 feet on the eastern flank of the Matterhorn.

He says they were without a guide, but it is unclear if they were climbing or hiking.

Bornet says a family member reported the two missing Friday morning, and relatives have been notified of the deaths.

Bornet did not identify the victims by name Saturday because of privacy rules.

It is unclear where the two were from in the United States, and the U.S. Embassy in Bern did not immediately return calls.
