Zvonareva rolls; Radwanska falls in Moscow

Top-seeded Russian favorite Vera hot Agnieszka round upset victim Wednesday at the $721,000 Kremlin Cup tennis event.

The 2008 Kremlin Cup runner-up Zvonareva, who hails from Moscow, lambasted Serbian teenager Bojana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-1 in exactly one hour on the indoor hardcourts at Olympic Stadium.

The second-seeded Radwanska, meanwhile, was seeking a third title in three events, but that's not going to happen after the Pole was sent packing by Czech Lucie Safarova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, on Day 3. The world No. 8 Radwanska was fresh off a pair of quality Asian tiles in Beijing and Tokyo.

Another upset came when Estonian Kaia Kanepi cut down fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7). The French Open runner-up and 2010 Roland Garros titlist Schiavone was the Moscow champion two years ago and runner-up back in 2005.

Schiavone saved a pair of match points to no avail against Kanepi.

"It was really a tough match," Schiavone said. "I could not play my best. This is the end of the year, so maybe it's time for me to come back to recover and to recharge my battery to be ready for the next year."

In an all-Russian second-rounder on Wednesday, Vera Dushevina took out Nadia Petrova 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Petrova was the runner-up in her native Moscow back in 2006. Dushevina will face Safarova in Friday's quarterfinals.

The first round concluded with a pair of matches, as eighth-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova topped Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and Elena Vesnina dismantled wild card and fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 6-1 in a mere 49 minutes. The diminutive Cibulkova was a finalist last week in Austria.

In some second-round action on Thursday, third-seeded French slugger Marion Bartoli will meet Russian Ksenia Pervak and sixth-seeded Russian favorite Svetlana Kuznetsova will encounter Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova. Bartoli was last week's Osaka champion.

This week's winner will earn $118,000.
