Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed infielder Gregorio Petit on the 15-day disabled list due to a right hand contusion he sustained in Tuesday's game at Toronto.

Rookie infielder Jose Pirela was reinstated from the 15-day DL in a corresponding move and will start at second base in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Petit was forced to exit New York's 6-3 win over the Blue Jays after being hit in the hand while swinging at a pitch in the eighth inning. The 30-year-old journeyman was batting .200 with five RBI in 17 games since being acquired from Houston shortly prior to Opening Day.

Pirela, who went 8-for-24 with two triples and six runs scored in a September call-up by the Yankees last season, landed on the DL after suffering a concussion when running into the outfield wall during a spring training game on March 22.

The utilityman just completed an eight-game minor league rehab assignment in which he hit .364 (12-for-33) with a home run, five doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored.
