San Francisco, CA – Madison Bumgarner and Doug Fister continue to engage in a tense pitchers duel during Game 2 of the World Series, with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants still deadlocked at 0-0 after six innings of play at AT&T Park.
Making his first start since Oct. 14, Bumgarner has struck out eight batters while yielding just two hits and one walk. Fister, who tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Detroit's Game 1 win over the New York Yankees in the ALCS, has scattered three hits and a walk.
Both teams had their best scoring chances come in the second inning. Detroit's Prince Fielder was thrown out at the plate while attempting to come home on a Delmon Young double in the Tigers' half, while the Giants loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame before Bumgarner popped up for the final out.
Fister got out of the jam despite being struck on the side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Gregor Blanco. The Detroit right-hander did subsequently issue a walk to Brandon Crawford, but regrouped to retire the next 12 San Francisco hitters.
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 1-for-3 with a single thus far, one day after tying a World Series record with three home runs in San Francisco's 8-3 victory in Game 1.
