ROCK HILL, S.C. – Andre Jones scored 17 points to lead Winthrop to a 63-48 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night.
Gideon Gamble, Matt Morgan and George Valentine added nine points each for the Eagles (7-8, 3-2 Big South Conference), who have won two of their past three games.
Gardner-Webb (6-12, 2-3), which has lost eight consecutive games, cut Winthrop's lead to 30-27 on Stefon Johnson's layup with 17:04 remaining, but Valentine hit two jumpers and Robbie Dreher scored on a layup for a 36-27 advantage with 15:04 to play.
Winthrop increased its lead to 43-31 on Morgan's jumper with 12:06 remaining.
The Eagles shot 48.3 percent from the field in the second half (14 of 29) after shooting 36 percent (9 of 25) in the first half.
Gardner-Webb shot 35.6 percent from the field (16 of 45) and committed 24 turnovers.
Laron Buggs led the Bulldogs with 11 points and Johnson added 10.
