Eugene, OR – Jesse Williams, the reigning world champion in the men's high jump, finished fourth at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials on Monday but still qualified for the London Games.
Williams was one of four jumpers to clear 2.28-meters, and on misses he placed fourth behind Jamie Nieto, Erik Kynard and Nick Ross. Despite finishing third, Ross did not have the Olympic 'A' standard of 2.31-m.
Nieto, Kynard and Williams had already met the standard and will all head to the Summer Games.
There were four other qualifying finals on Monday.
Nicholas Symmonds won the men's 800-meter trial in 1:43.92 -- 0.72 seconds in front of Khadevis Robinson. Symmonds and Robinson will be joined in London by third-place finisher Duane Solomon Jr. (1:44.65).
Alysia Montano, Geena Gall and Alice Schmidt qualified in the women's 800- meters. Montano won in 1:59.08.
Sam Humphreys and Samuel Crouser finished 1-2 at the men's javelin final, but like Ross in the high jump, neither had the Olympic 'A' standard. Craig Kinsley, Sean Furey and Cyrus Hostetler -- who all had reached the standard of 269 feet this season -- finished 4-5-6, respectively, and will head to London.
Only one athlete in the women's triple jump -- Amanda Shock -- qualified for the Olympics. Smock already accomplished the Olympic 'A' standard of 46 feet, 11 inches, then jumped 45 feet, nine inches to finish first on Monday.
Sheena Gordon (45-4 1/2) and Andrea Geubelle (45-3) both fell just short.
