Sporting Lisbon announced Wednesday that former Belgian international Frankie Vercauteren has been hired as the team's new coach.

Vercauteren, 55, will take over at the end of the month, relieving caretaker boss Oceano Cruz of his coaching duties.

In his managerial career, Vercauteren has enjoyed stints in charge of the Belgium national team, Anderlecht, and most recently Genk. He helped guide Anderlecht to three Belgian league titles.
