Sporting Lisbon announced late on Monday that it has sacked coach Franky Vercauteren less than three months after the Belgian was appointed.

"As of [Monday] Frank Vercauteren is no longer head coach of the football team," Sporting said in a statement.

Vercauteren, who previously coached the Belgium national team as well as Belgian side Genk, failed to spark a positive run at Sporting, leaving the club 12th in the league table through just 13 matches.

Sporting has turned to Jesualdo Ferreira to revive the campaign, announcing the 66-year-old as Vercauteren's replacement on Tuesday.

Ferreira was appointed as the club's sporting director last month and will take over the first-team coaching duties in conjunction with that position.
