Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a knee injury in his team's 1-1 draw with Espanyol on Saturday.

Varane suffered the injury in the first 20 minutes of the match and had to be substituted.

Tests on Monday confirmed that he had sustained damage to his meniscus that will require surgery in the coming days.

The 20-year-old has been in good form over the second half of the season, but he will miss Friday's Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid as well as Real's final two La Liga matches after featuring in 15 games in the league this term.
