Van der Walt wins by 2 in Chile

Santiago, Chile (SportsNetwork.com) - Dawie van der Walt fired a 6-under 65 to win the Chile Classic by two strokes on Sunday.

Van der Walt finished at 21-under-par 263. This was his first victory on the Web.com Tour.

"It's very sweet. It's been a long time coming," said van der Walt, who played the last three events on the European Tour. "I played pretty decent last week. I wasn't thinking I wasn't going to make the cut, but thought I might play well here. I certainly wasn't expecting to win."

Erik Barnes birdied the final three holes at Club de Golf Mapocho for a 5- under 66. He ended alone in second at minus-19.

Third-round leader Craig Barlow managed a 2-under 69 on Sunday. He shared third place with Wes Roach (68) at 18-under-par 266.

Greg Eason (65) and Brett Drewitt (68) tied for fifth at minus-17, while Jamie Lovemark was one stroke back at 16-under-par 268 after a final-round 68.

Van der Walt got off to a fast start with birdies at one and two. However, he stumbled to a bogey at the third and dipped one behind Barlow.

After a par at the fourth, van der Walt birdied five and six. That created a 3-way tie for the lead with Barlow and Roach. Van der Walt birdied the ninth en route to making the turn at 19-under.

Van der Walt and Barlow were tied for the lead at that point. Both leaders birdied the par-5 12th. Van der Walt ran off five pars in a row from the 13th to remain atop the leaderboard.

The South African birdied the par-5 18th to win by two over Barnes.

Barnes birdied three of the first four to jump to 17-under. He stumbled to a bogey at the sixth, but bounced back with a birdie on the ninth.

Around the turn, Barnes slipped to 16-under with a birdie at the par-3 13th. He birdied the final three holes to end two back.

"Dawie played great today. He hit it good. He chipped it good. He putted good. That's hard to beat," said Barnes, who was paired with van der Walt in the final round.

Barlow had birdies at the first and fifth. After faltering to a bogey at the par-7 seventh, Barlow jumped into the lead at 19-under thanks to a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth.

After a birdie at 12 kept him tied for the lead, Barlow tripped to bogeys at 15 and 17 to fall into a tie for third.

Roach had four birdies on the front nine to make the turn tied for the lead, but he carded eight pars and a bogey on the back nine to end at minus-18.

NOTES: Van der Walt earned $108,000 for the win ... Latin America Amateur Championship winner Matias Dominguez closed with a 2-under 70 to finish tied for 30th ... The tour returns to the United States next week for the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, where Kris Blanks won last year.
