The Minnesota Twins inked free agent year contract on Wednesday.

The signing, reported to be worth $3 million by MLB.com, allows former American League MVP Joe Mauer some much-needed assistance behind the plate. Mauer spent time at first base last season in an attempt to prolong his career after suffering through bilateral leg weakness.

Doumit, who had spent his entire career with the Pirates, has also dealt with a litany of injuries, including a left ankle sprain that limited him to 77 games last year.

He batted .303 in 218 at-bats last season but has played more than 83 games just twice in his career.

The 30-year-old backstop was drafted in 1999 and broke into the majors in 2005. He is a career .271 hitter and has 67 home runs and 266 RBI in 611 games.
