Tway tops Levin in Boise playoff

Boise, ID – Kevin Tway birdied the first playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Spencer Levin and win the Boise Open.

Tway carded a 7-under 64 at Hillcrest Country Club, while Levin fired an 8- under 63 as they finished at 23-under-par 261. They beat the tournament scoring record of 262 that Luke Guthrie set last year.

The pair returned to the 18th hole for the playoff. Tway made birdie from seven feet out to top Levin, who was making just his second start of the year.

"I just had to stay patient all day. I knew the last three holes were pretty easy, and were good birdie opportunities, so I was trying to keep making pars," Tway said in a TV interview. "I didn't really give myself many good opportunities, but I salvaged pars, then made a nice putt on 15, eagled 16 and birdied 17, which was really nice."

Michael Putnam, who was going for his third win of the year and an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour, fired a 63 of his own to end one back at minus-22. He shared third place with third-round leader Philip Pettitt, Jr. (67) and Bronson La'Cassie (65).

Hunter Haas, who eagled 16 and had a hole-in-one on 17, closed with a 64. He was joined in sixth place at 20-under-par 264 by Matt Bettencourt (65), Jason Allred (66), Jamie Lovemark (66), Ben Martin (63) and Will Wilcox (67).

Russell Knox, who fired a 59 in round two, closed with rounds of 68-69 to finish in a tie for 12th at minus-19.

Putnam, who went out nine groups ahead of the leaders, fired a bogey-free 63 to get in at minus-22.

Of the playoff combatants, Levin posted 23-under first. He had similar nines. On the front side, he birdied every other hole from the third to the ninth to make the turn at 19-under.

Levin, who has missed most of the year after having thumb surgery, birdied the 12th to get within two of the lead. The 29-year-old vaulted to the top of the leaderboard with three birdies in a 4-hole span from the 14th. He parred the last to end one clear of Putnam.

Tway, who had just two top-10 finishes in his previous 10 tour starts, got off to a quick start with birdies at two and three. After a trio of pars, he converted a birdie try at the seventh to move to 19-under.

After seven pars in a row, a quick scoring burst gave Tway a share of the lead. He converted a birdie chance on the par-4 15th and followed with an eagle at the 16th.

Tway birdied the par-3 17th to gain a share of the lead. He parred the last to force the extra session.

NOTES: Tway collected $139,500 for his first tour win ... He moved to sixth on the money list with the win ... The tour heads to Pennsylvania next week for the Mylan Classic, where Robert Streb won last year.
