Timbers invade Seattle for Cascadia clash

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders will square off for the first time this season on Sunday as the two Cascadia Cup rivals meet up at CenturyLink Field.

Both teams enter the fixture having won two of their last three games with the Timbers going winless in March but rebounding to claim six points from three games in April, including a hard-fought 1-0 win at New York City FC last Sunday.

Seattle enters the fixture following a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids that saw Lamar Neagle score twice in the opening 25 minutes while Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins also continued their strong starts to the campaign with an assist and a goal respectively.

If Portland wants to continue its good run of form this month the Timbers will need to keep the duo of Dempsey and Martins in check, as the two have combined for seven goals and four assists.

The emergence of Neagle would add another dimension to the Seattle attack, but the Sounders will have to cope without defender Chad Marshall, who was hit with a one-game suspension by the league for dangerous play against the Rapids.

Fanendo Adi has been the main goal threat for the Timbers this term with three goals in seven games, while Dairon Asprilla has started to show signs of life recently and could help the club offensively in the absence of both Will Johnson and Diego Valeri.

The Timbers weren't exactly firing on all cylinders against NYC on Sunday, but the club managed to grind out a result, which was a big positive for goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey.

"We haven't gotten the amount of points that we feel that we deserved and now we get three points when we played an okay game," said Kwarasey, who made five saves in earning the clean sheet against NYC. "We've played better earlier this season, but everybody is happy and finally the luck went our way."

The Timbers have already lost to Vancouver this season, putting them behind in the Cascadia Cup race, while this match marks the second meeting in the series that will determine which of the three sides take home the coveted cup.
