Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers have claimed right- handed pitcher Josh Zeid off waivers from the Houston Astros, the team announced Thursday.

Zeid, 27, allowed 16 earned runs in 20 2/3 innings for a 6.97 ERA in 23 games for the Astros in 2014. He also made 17 appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

In 48 career appearances with Houston, Zeid owns a 5.21 ERA in 48 1/3 innings with 42 strikeouts. He was acquired from Philadelphia in 2012, along with pitcher Jared Cosart, first baseman Jonathan Singleton and outfielder Domingo Santana, in the trade that sent outfielder Hunter Pence to the Phillies.

To make room for Zeid on the roster, the Tigers designated outfielder Ezequiel Carrera for assignment.

In 45 games for the Tigers in 2014, Carrera batted .261 and stole seven bases in eight attempts.
