Birmingham, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Southwestern Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors have upheld penalties against Grambling State as a result of the university's forfeited football game at Jackson State in October.
The SWAC is imposing a $50,000 fine and a three-game mandate for Grambling State to play in Jackson, Miss., during the 2014, 2015, and 2016 seasons. The ruling is an effort to compensate for Jackson State's lost revenues at its canceled Homecoming game Oct. 19.
Grambling State forfeited the game after its players refused to travel to Jackson State during a six-day walkout protesting conditions within the program.
"The SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors reviewed Grambling State's appeal thoroughly and a decision was rendered," SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp said. "The league is now looking forward to moving on to ensure this situation does not happen again."
