Las Vegas, NV – Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart hit the jackpot at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first time by winning Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400.
Stewart made a daring three-wide pass on Clint Bowyer and Brad Keselowski for the lead just after a late-race restart. He then held off Jimmie Johnson in a pair of restarts during the final laps to claim his first Las Vegas win in his 14th attempt here.
Johnson finished second after having to start from the rear of the field in a backup car. The five-time Sprint Cup championship wrecked his primary car during Saturday's final practice.
Greg Biffle placed third, while Stewart's teammate, Ryan Newman, took the fourth spot. Carl Edwards, the defending race winner, completed the top-five.
Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard, Jamie McMurray and Trevor Bayne finished sixth through ninth, respectively. Dale Earnhardt Jr. dominated in the early going by leading 70 of the first 71 laps, but Earnhardt Jr. dealt with an ill- handling car and faded late in the race to finish 10th.
Stewart won five of the last 10 races last season to capture his third title in the series.
