Latrobe, PA – Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress will have surgery on his shoulder.
"During Thursday's practice, Plaxico suffered what appears to be a significant shoulder injury," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. "He is scheduled for surgery on Monday, and we will re-evaluate the injury at that time. I will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available."
NFL.com reported on Thursday that Burress sustained a torn rotator cuff.
Burress, who spent his first five NFL seasons in Pittsburgh, signed with the Steelers in November of last season and appeared in four games, catching three passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.
The 35-year-old wideout was expected to be in the mix to be Pittsburgh's fourth or fifth receiver, but the shoulder injury is likely to end Burress' season, and possibly his career.
In 11 NFL seasons with the Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets, Burress has 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns. He missed the 2009 and 2010 seasons while serving prison time in New York on a weapons possession charge.
