A starting linebacker at North Dakota State has been given a suspended 10-day jail sentence for resisting a police officer after an early-morning brawl outside a downtown Fargo restaurant.

State court records show 21-year-old Travis Beck was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to the misdemeanor.

Beck's attorney, Bruce Quick, tells the Fargo Forum the plea agreement allows Beck to put his legal woes behind him so a trial won't interfere with the Bison football season.

The charge stemmed from a fight in June in which police said Beck knocked a man unconscious. A more serious assault charge was dismissed earlier.

The 6-foot, 212-pound North Dakota native is a starter for the two-time Football Championship Subdivision champions. He was the most valuable player in the 2012 FCS championship game.
