Simpson soars to 5th in world rankings

Philadelphia, PA – Thanks to his improbable come-from-behind victory Sunday at the U.S. Open, Webb Simpson soared nine spots to a career- best ranking of No. 5 in the world rankings.

Simpson was six strokes off the pace early in the final round, but came out on top as third-round co-leaders Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk faltered late.

The top four in the rankings remained the same with Luke Donald followed by Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods.

After Simpson, Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar both dipped one spot apiece to sixth and seventh. Jason Dufner inched up one to eighth, while Justin Rose and Hunter Mahan both fell two to ninth and 10th, respectively.

McDowell, who shared second place behind Simpson at The Olympic Club, jumped 10 places to No. 11 this week. Steve Stricker and Martin Kaymer were both down one to 12 and 13.

Dustin Johnson tumbled four to 14th, Phil Mickelson slid a pair to 15th and Charl Schwartzel was down one to 16th.

Adam Scott and Zach Johnson held steady in 17th and 18th, Rickie Fowler moved up one to 19th and Louis Oosthuizen tumbled four to 20th.

Jason Day and Sergio Garcia both fell out of the top 20 this week, dropping two notches each to 21st and 22nd.
