ST. LOUIS – Kevin Shattenkirk had a goal and an assist against his former team, Andy McDonald added a goal and two assists, and the St. Louis Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 Tuesday night.
David Backes also scored and Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots to help St. Louis win for the fifth time in the last seven games. The Blues also snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Avalanche, beating Colorado for the first time since April 12, 2009.
Kevin Porter scored his career-best 14th goal of the season for the Avalanche, who have lost six of seven and 16 of their last 19.
Shattenkirk converted on a 5-on-3 power play early at 4:07 of the second period to give the Blues the lead for good 2-1. It was his ninth goal of the season and second for St. Louis.
McDonald added an empty-netter with 40 seconds to go.
St. Louis acquired Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart from Colorado on Feb. 19 in exchange for Erik Johnson and Jay McClement.
Backes got the Blues started with his team-leading 30th goal of the season with 5:05 left in the first period. Backes, stationed in front on the net, tipped in a shot from the point by Shattenkirk.
Colorado tied the game less than 2 minutes later on Kevin Porter's career-high 14th goal of the season.
Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj also had 26 saves while losing for the first time in six starts against the Blues.
The Blues picked up four fighting majors to push their league-leading total to 78.
NOTES: Nine Avalanche players missed the game due to injuries, bringing the season total of man-games lost to a team-record 442. ... McClement played in his 257th consecutive. ...
