New York, NY – World No. 1 and 16-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams has been installed as the top seed for the 2013 U.S. Open.
The 31-year-old superstar is the reigning U.S. and French Open champ. She beat reigning Australian Open titlist Victoria Azarenka in last year's finale in New York, while Azarenka upset Williams in last week's 1-versus-2 final in Cincinnati.
Williams is a four-time U.S. Open titlist and two-time runner-up. She's played in the last two finals at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, having finished as a stunning runner-up to Samantha Stosur two years ago.
The powerful Williams is followed in the seedings by the No. 2 and former No. 1 Azarenka, former top-ranked 2006 U.S. Open champ and 2013 French Open runner-up Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Sara Errani. Seeds six through 10 are Aussie Open runner-up Li Na, 2009 U.S. Open finalist and former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, and another former No. 1, 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic.
Two-time champion and former No. 1 Venus Williams is unseeded for the fortnight, currently ranked 60th in the world.
The latest U.S. Open will get underway Monday in Flushing Meadows.
