Ottawa Senators defenseman Matt Carkner underwent surgery on his right knee and will be out indefinitely.

Sens general manager Bryan Murray said on Monday that the 30-year-old will be out indefinitely. According to Murray, the procedure was necessary due to the recurrence of a knee issue which bothered him in the latter half of last year. Carkner was out of the lineup from the end of February through the end of the regular season.

The injury means that 20-year-old Swede David Rundblad will most likely snag a spot on the club's season-opening roster.

Ottawa begins its 2011-12 season on Friday at Detroit.
