Authorities are trying to determine the cause of death of a junior college soccer star who collapsed inside his upstate New York apartment.

Officials at Herkimer County Community College say 22-year-old Peter McAvoy of Scotland collapsed about 6 p.m. Saturday at his campus apartment at the Mohawk Valley school.

Athletic director Donald Dutcher says McAvoy was unresponsive and taken to Little Falls Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Dutcher says there will be an autopsy.

McAvoy was an All-American and captain at Herkimer. Dutcher says the defender was one of the most popular students.

The Generals have won three consecutive national junior college championships, with McAvoy playing major roles in the last two.
