San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The University of San Diego and San Diego State University announced jointly on Wednesday their football teams will kick off the 2015 season against each other on Sept. 5 at Qualcomm Stadium.
For USD, the game replaces a previously scheduled FCS matchup against Big Sky Conference member Northern Arizona.
The Toreros, from the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League, will be playing San Diego State for the second time, having previously lost 42-12 in 1961.
"We will have to play our very best to compete against them," said USD third- year coach Dale Lindsey. "I don't know that we have the same amount of talent the Aztecs have, but we do have some very good, smart, hard-working guys."
USD is coming off a 9-3 season in which it won the Pioneer Football League championship and advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history. The Toreros expect to return six starters on offense and six starters on defense.
San Diego State, a Mountain West Conference member, finished 7-6 and appeared in a bowl game for the fifth straight season, losing to Navy, 17-16, in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
