In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Chad Ruhwedel has another reason to be thankful for jumping to the NHL.

Ruhwedel ended his college career at UMass Lowell to sign with Buffalo on Saturday. Had that not happened, the 22-year-old figures he would have been with his friends watching the marathon not far from the finish line where two explosions killed three people and wounded more than 170 on Monday.

His friends unhurt, Ruhwedel has turned his attention to those who were affected by the tragedy, while putting aside thoughts about his homecoming.

Ruhwedel and the Sabres traveled to Boston on Tuesday to prepare to play the Bruins the following day. The game's scheduled to be the city's first professional sporting event since the marathon.
