Defenseman Tomas Kaberle agreed to a three-year, $12.75 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, according to a TSN report.
Not long after the deal was announced, the Hurricanes traded defenseman Joe Corvo to the Boston Bruins for a fourth-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft.
“Tomas is one of the top puck-moving defensemen in the NHL and power-play specialist,” said Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford. “He has had a good career and is now a Stanley Cup champion. We welcome him to Carolina and look forward to his contributions to the Hurricanes.”
Kaberle is coming off a Stanley Cup victory with the Bruins, who acquired the 33-year-old from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline. Kaberle had 4 goals and 43 assists in 82 games with the Bruins and Maple Leafs, but just 1 goal and 8 assists in 24 games following the trade.
Kaberle saw his role diminish during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he posted 11 points -- all assists -- in 25 games. He was plus-8.
Kaberle is reunited with Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice, who coached the Maple Leafs for two seasons between 2006-08.
Kaberle is one of the game's better offensive defensemen. In 902 career regular-season games over 12 NHL seasons, he has 84 goals and 445 assists.
