Renfrew beats Hill in 4-hole playoff

Fort McMurray, AB – Cory Renfrew birdied the fourth playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Matt Hill and win the Syncrude Boreal Open.

Renfrew fired a 9-under 63 to end at 17-under-par 271. Hill rolled in an 8- foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation to post a 5-under 67 and force the playoff at Fort McMurray Golf Club.

Renfrew and Hill broke Danny Sahl's year old scoring record. Sahl posted 272 over four rounds last year.

The duo played the 18th until there was a winner. On the first extra hole, Renfrew missed from 20 feet out and Hill also missed from about eight feet.

The second time through, both players had about 20 feet for birdie on the par-5. Renfrew missed first and Hill failed to convert with his second chance to end it.

As they played the 18th for a third time. Hill's third shot sailed over the green, and he chipped to seven feet after getting a drop from the grandstands.

Renfrew couldn't convert from about 30 feet out. The pair made their par efforts for the third time and again headed back to the tee.

The fourth time through, both players were determined to end it. Hill stuffed his approach inside five feet. Renfrew was just outside him, and made his birdie putt.

Hill, the 2009 NCAA Individual champion, missed his short birdie try to give Renfrew the title.

Nate McCoy, who led after each of the first three rounds, carded a 1-under 71 to end alone in third at 14-under-par 274. Daniel Im (69) and Roger Sloan (71) shared fourth at minus-11.

Kent Eger (71), Tyler Aldridge (72), Sebastian Saavedra (72) and Andrew Roque (68) tied for sixth at 9-under-par 279.

NOTES: Earlier in the day, there was a weather delay that lasted over five hours...Renfrew earned $24,000 for the win...The tour heads to Saskatchewan next week for the Dakota Dunes Casino Open, where Joe Panzeri is expected to defend his title.
