The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday that reliever Jonathan Broxton had season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor mass in his right forearm.

The rehab timetable for an injury of this type is six months, which puts his status for spring training in question.

Broxton, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, gave up two runs -- one earned -- while failing to record an out in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against Arizona. The appearance was his fifth since being activated on Aug. 7 following almost two months on the DL with a strained right elbow.

The right-hander went 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 34 games this season.

Broxton signed a three-year, $21 million contract over the winter.
