Red Bull New York announced Tuesday that winger Lloyd Sam will be out for the remainder of the season.

Head coach Hans Backe broke the news to reporters on Tuesday after the former Leeds United attacker picked up an injury to his right knee in New York's scoreless draw with Sporting Kansas City at the weekend.

"Lloyd Sam is out for the season, unfortunately," said Backe. "Knee injury, I don't know the exact diagnosis but he's out, definitely."

A Red Bulls spokesman said the exact diagnosis was a PCL injury and that surgery may not be necessary.

New York will conclude its regular season at the Philadelphia Union on Saturday before moving on to the playoffs.
