Dallas, TX – The Texas Rangers and shortstop Elvis Andrus are reportedly on the verge of a long-term contract.
According to the Dallas Morning News and MLB.com, the framework is in place for a multi-year extension. FOX Sports and CBS Sports both have reported it to be an eight-year deal worth $120 million.
Andrus is currently signed through the 2014 season, but the extension would carry through the 2022 campaign. However, all reports indicate the new deal would likely include an opt-out clause after the 2018 season.
The 25-year-old native of Venezuela has just begun his fifth season as the Rangers' starting shortstop. He went 0-for-4 in Sunday's opener against Houston.
Andrus, a two-time All-Star, is a career .274 hitter in 602 big league games. He has played at least 145 games every year since his rookie campaign of 2009 and last year set career bests with a .286 average, 31 doubles and 62 runs batted in.
