Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired catcher Chris Stewart from the New York Yankees in exchange for a player to be named later.
Stewart is the second former Yankee backstop to join the Pirates, following Russell Martin. The two were also teammates in New York in 2012.
After Martin left the Bronx for Pittsburgh as a free agent following the 2012 season, Stewart started a majority of the games behind the plate for the Yankees last year.
Stewart appeared in a career-high 109 games in 2013 and batted .211 with four homers and 25 runs batted in. He had never played more than 67 games in any of his previous seven big league seasons.
The 31-year-old journeyman is a career .214 hitter with eight homers and 51 RBI in 257 games with the White Sox, Rangers, Padres, Giants and Yankees.
Stewart became expendable in New York after the Yankees agreed to terms with free agent Brian McCann last month.
