Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending August 19.

Hamels won both of his starts last week, going 16 2/3 innings total, tops in the National League and second-most in all of baseball. The left-hander began his run on Monday with a 4-0 shutout of the Miami Marlins, notching the last of back-to-back whitewashes, then pitched into the eighth to record a 4-3 win over Milwaukee on Saturday.

For the season, the 28-year-old ranks second in the NL with 171 1/3 innings pitched, and third with 168 strikeouts -- bolstering a 14-6 record.

Other players considered for the award included Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun, Pirates outfielder Garrett Jones, Los Angeles starter Chad Billingsley and Kyle Kendrick of Philadelphia.
