Phillies sign Zambrano to minor league deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with pitcher Carlos Zambrano.

The right-hander went 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA in 35 games (20 starts) with the Marlins last season.

The 31-year-old Venezuelan was with the Cubs from 2001-2011, going 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA and 1,542 strikeouts over 319 games (282 starts). His rocky tenure with Chicago ended when he was traded to the Marlins for pitcher Chris Volstad on Jan. 5, 2012.

A three-time All-Star, Zambrano is a career .238 hitter with 24 home runs, 26 doubles and 71 RBI.

The Phillies are looking for rotation help due to injuries to Roy Halladay and John Lannan. Halladay (shoulder surgery) could miss the rest of the season and Lannan (quad) has been on the DL since April.
