San Diego Padres pitcher Paul Clemens was taking his batting duties very seriously on Saturday.

A little too seriously.

After going overboard on the pine tar for his bat, Clemens wound up with a lot of the excess on his jersey.

"Before he went up to hit, he put more pine tar on his bat than a lot of guys use in a year, and managed to get that all over his uniform." Padres manager Andy Green said, via MLB.com.

The umpiring crew wanted him to change his jersey, but unfortunately the Padres didn't have another Clemens jersey on hand.

And that's how you become "Player" in an MLB game.

Fellow pitcher Jon Edwards expressed some solidarity with Clemens, though he had to resort to some craftiness.
