The San Diego Padres placed third baseman Chase Headley on the 15-day disabled list Sunday as the team announced its Opening Day roster.

Headley suffered a fracture to the tip of his left thumb during a spring training game while trying to break up a double play. As he slid into second base, Headley jammed his thumb into the bag.

In 161 games last season, Headley hit .286 with career bests of 31 homers and 115 runs batted in. He won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger last year while leading the National League RBI.

In preparation for Monday's season-opener against the New York Mets, the Padres also placed infielders James Darnell and Logan Forsythe on the 15-day DL and transferred pitchers Cory Luebke and Casey Kelly to the 60-day DL.

To fill out the 25-man roster, San Diego selected the contracts of infielders Jedd Gyorko and Cody Ransom.
