MANSFIELD, Pa. – The school that hosted football's first night game more than a century ago is finally installing permanent lights.
Mansfield University announced Friday it will begin installing a new artificial playing surface and lights at Karl Van Norman Field this spring.
The then-Mansfield State Normal School hosted the first night football game in 1892 against Wyoming Seminary. Lights were provided by the company that later became General Electric.
But Mansfield didn't install permanent lights in the 121 years since. It even shelved its football program after the 2006 season because of budget constraints.
The renovated stadium will be home to the university's field hockey team and the sprint football team it started in 2008.
The first night game is set for Sept. 14 when the lightweight football team will hosts Princeton.
