Oilers seek to build off road win vs. Rangers

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Edmonton Oilers will try to build off their first road victory of the season on Sunday night as they visit the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden.

The Oilers lost their first five road contests of the season, going 0-4-1, and dropped the first two of a five-game swing before topping the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Friday. Boyd Gordon potted the winning goal in the late stages of the third period.

Iiro Pakarinen netted his first career goal and Mark Arcobello lit the lamp as part of a 52-shot showing by Edmonton. Teddy Purcell finished with two assists to help his club halt a four-game slide overall.

"We were able to respond after their second goal, gave a good push-back and got the win," said Gordon.

Viktor Fasth came up with 29 saves for the victory, his first in four starts this season.

Edmonton may go back to Ben Scrivens in net tonight and he is 2-1-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and .943 save percentage in three prior meetings with the Rangers.

The Oilers and Rangers split two meetings a season ago, with each club winning on the road. Edmonton picked up a 2-1 win at MSG on Feb. 6, with Nail Yakupov scoring the game-winner with 1:38 to play and Scrivens making 35 saves.

The Rangers were bested 5-4 by the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, the first time in five games they failed to record a point. They had gone 2-0-2 before the road setback.

Rick Nash netted his 11th goal of the season in the loss, tied with Anaheim's Corey Perry for the NHL lead, and Derek Stepan had an assist in his season debut. He had missed the first 12 games with a broken leg suffered during training camp.

Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello each had a goal and an assist, Carl Hagelin also scored and Cam Talbot turned aside 26 shots in defeat.

"We played right into their hands," Zuccarello said. "We have to get into lanes and back each other up."

With Talbot having gotten the start last night, Henrik Lundqvist will return to net for this contest. Lundqvist, though, is just 1-1-2 in four career meetings with the Oilers, posting a 2.53 GAA and .909 save percentage.
