Ohio State named Kevin McGuff head women's basketball coach on Tuesday.

"We are excited with the opportunity for Kevin to lead our women's basketball program," said associate vice president and director of athletics Gene Smith. "He is a proven leader and has done a marvelous job everywhere he has been. We welcome him back to his home, Ohio."

McGuff spent the previous two seasons at Washington, compiling a 41-26 record and two WNIT berths. Last season, he led the Huskies to an 21-12 (11-7 Pac-12) mark and reached the second round of the WNIT.

Prior to joining Washington, McGuff was the head coach at Xavier for nine seasons, posting a 214-73 overall record. He led the Musketeers to five Atlantic 10 Tournament titles and earned an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10.

McGuff replaces Jim Foster, who was the program's winningest coach (279-82), but last season finished 18-13 overall and placed eighth in the Big Ten standings.

"I am extremely excited and humbled to be the next women's basketball coach at Ohio State," McGuff said. "This is an amazing opportunity for my family and me to come back to the state of Ohio. I would like to thank Gene, Miechelle Willis and President Gee for putting their faith in me to be their next head coach. As someone who is from the state of Ohio, I know how special of a place this is and my goal is to have Ohio State competing at the highest level of women's college basketball."
