Foxborough, MA – The New England Revolution climbed to fifth place in the Eastern Conference thanks to a wild 2-1 victory over D.C. United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.
D.C. took the lead from a fortuitous circumstance in the 11th minute when a low cross from Luis Silva was turned into the net by Revolution defender Scott Caldwell.
New England had a tremendous opportunity to level the score when Dejan Jakovic was harshly whistled for a foul on Lee Nguyen in the box, but justice was served on the ensuing penalty attempt as Bill Hamid denied Nguyen.
It made no difference to the Revs as they regrouped and netted the equalizer a minute later. Diego Fagundez narrowly beat the offside trap to latch on to Saer Sene's through ball and slip a shot past Hamid for his 11th goal of the season.
New England continued to push for an equalizer, which eventually paid dividends in the form of another penalty in the 82nd minute. Lewis Neal was the culprit this time, and Nguyen atoned for his earlier miss to convert from the spot for the game-winning strike.
The Revs improve to 40 points on the season to move one point clear of the Chicago Fire.
D.C. United drops its 20th match of the season to remain at the foot of the overall MLS table on 15 points.
